To my brother Pete turning 49

We each stand on a vessel on the ocean,
with neither compass points nor means to steer;
the sails above us fill, winds of emotion
are blowing us to love, away from fear.
Catch the winds I send you, brother dear,
to push you on toward your heart's desire.
All things you wish are yours and very near,
accept them now, and soon you will acquire.
The wind is blowing, feel it raise you higher,
for you this day will mark a new beginning.
The power of the universe conspires
to bring you all that you have hope of winning.
My brother, you are loved, unique and treasured,
with talent and reserves that can't be measured.

In September I received a birthday card from my brother, the very first in all our long yrs together. I was amazed, didn't even know he knew the date, It crossed the sea to me in Australia, by the time I was reading it he had died. (lung cancer). Your poem turned a memory, "Catch the winds I send you brother dear." so lovely.

Dear Ronnica, your story makes me sad and happy. Please accept my condolences for your loss; I am happy that your affection for your brother was reciprocated, and he gave you a pleasant memory as one of his last actions.
None of us is guaranteed a long life - we only have today to love each other.
Thanks for your visit and touching comment.

How lucky you both are to have this type of relationship. I am very close to my younger brother, and I could feel the love in every line. "Blowing us to love, away from fear" is certainly something we all wish for as we mature. Congratulations on this wonderful present. Peace, Liz

    Outstanding

There is always a special relationship between brothers and sisters and this is a well-written poem that celebrates that bond. I liked how you developed the theme using the imagery of the ship and then of the wind blowing him to happiness. A lovely birthday poem full of affection.

    This sonnet of fraternal love

is finely tuned by one sole, informing metaphor and I think that's great. This is the sailing ship metaphor. Obviously, you are both not two ships in the night but rather two ships bound by the sea of destiny towards firmer love. The final couplet encapsulates the immeasurability of the ties that bind. Congratulations on this sonnet that furthers your wonderful sonneteer's career.

Thank you Ron. It is difficult to send gifts over the Internet, unless one has a credit card handy, or a talent for poetry. When he read the poem, Pete said, "Excellent!" and asked for a printout. That and your informed critique have made my day.

Words of poetry trickle onto the page to form a sonnet from your loving thoughts arising from a loving heart of a treasured friend of many.

A beautiful tribute to a plainly loved brother. Lovely imagery and metaphor. Excellent "winds of emotion are blowing us to love, away from fear." Touching "my brother, you are loved, unique and treasured."
May the year ahead be a rewarding one, with many happy winds and peaceful shores.

    A beautiful sibling sentiment

Ah, that we all might hold such love for our blood siblings, and the spiritual ones too. I truly love the sisterly advice of acceptance and hope/faith you give to your younger sibling, showing your appreciation for the unique treasure he is.

Happy birthday, Pete, today(?) and everyday!

    Be ever blessed and bright,

    Rahad
