Lament of Oedipus

How can I repay you, father mine?
How can I expect you to forgive?
As told by the curse, I shed your blood
And went to Thebes to live

Though I knew the curse, I did marry
The wife of the man I brought to death
What I did not know has cost me dear
For now she has lost her breath

Beautiful Mother, soft and sweet
Though you were mine, I did not see
My wife and my mother, that was you
Alas, it was meant to be

And how can I make amends?
For all that I’ve done to you?
I’d thought I’d achieved my dreams.
My mother, I was a fool

Why die for the past now, mother mine
Neither you nor I are free from sin
Nothing can erase the things we did
For we both had married kin

Beautiful Mother, soft and sweet,
Though you were mine, I did not see
My wife and my mother, that was you
Alas, it was meant to be

My wrath made me blind to you
I long to turn back the time
I killed without a word
My father, the fault is mine

So, where do I go from here?
And how to forget and forgive?
What's gone is forever lost
Now, all I can do is live

Author notes

This was done for my English class. We read King Oedipus and then had to rewrite a song to match the story. My song was "Brothers" by Vic Mignogna.

And yes, it is about murder and incest.

  • I could definitely tell this was one of such deception, betrayal, murder and incest. You mastered this well, such greatness within your pen.

This is a cool poem. Didn't really make me laugh though. It was a bit depressing. Anyways, I enjoyed the read!!! Thank you for entering my contest.
