My Epitaph – Villanelle..
When my allotted time has run full span
and death has taken those who best knew me,
I leave unfinished much that I began.
Always I tried to be a gentleman
and hope that may preserve my memory
when my allotted time has run full span
I often walked but seldom ever ran.
Though rarely shirking opportunity,
I leave unfinished much that I began.
Whatever I have done or yet still can,
I hope will benefit my family
when my allotted time has run full span.
I hand, to future members of my clan,
these verses though of all my poetry,
I leave unfinished much that I began.
If, on my stone, an epitaph you plan,
forgive me that, through frail mortality,
when my allotted time has run full span,
I leave unfinished much that I began.

Yes, you will be remembered as a true gentleman, Hugh, and remembrances of you will be much more than that.
Your poetry and other writings, your sense of humor, your compassion and caring, your friendship, your accomplishments... all of this is a part of you and will be remembered.
You've certainly made an impression on my life, having you as a friend
Love and
Dee

"You've certainly made an impression on my life, having you as a friend"
Ditto - it works both ways.
Love and hugs, XXX
Hugh.

You ARE a gentleman
The villanelle form is very effective here.

Your villanelle is terrific, Hugh, but I feel it is too soon to write about the end. I'm looking forward to many more wonderful poems on your page.
Thank you for showing me how to work through conflict and strengthen friendship - you are a great gentleman.

Dear Hugh,
You will always be a gentleman in my eyes Hugh, but you're going to be with us for a very long time to come yet. so don't even think of leaving us. There would be more than your muse mourning your passing believe me.
So remember, you're here to stay.
Love Bea

Ah, a wonderful poem and as I read it I thought how I must publish a book of my poetry so when I die all my poems will not be lost.
I shall give the books to my family and after they donate them to a charity shop, maybe someone will read them... who knows?
