The knights Song. (Thinking of his true love)

Missing image

(From the tales of Atoz, Songs of the Knight of the North)

The lady I am thinking of, is one who’s always near.
Though I have been forever gone, she still is with me here.
For, in my heart no other could so fill me with desire,
That one day I’ll be comin’ home my darlin’ for to squire

Her skin is alabaster white her eyes are opal blue,
Her lips are red as roses and her hair is claret too
No dawnin’ sunburst lovelier, no rainbow color’s hue
Could match the beauty of her countenance always so true

Though I’ve been gone a score of days, and many more will pass,
I’ve not to want for any other than my charmin’ lass
The one who holds my heart in tow and I will always be
The man who promised her his heart for all eternity

This maiden she is all my life and she sustains my soul
The pain that separation’s brought, though withering and dull
Can’t keep my mind, my heart, forever wantin’ none but her
For certain she’s my one desire, for her I must endure

The day I’ll be arrivin’ home then we will be as one
When finally this nightmare ends this bloody war is done
So, please be brave my lover do not let your hopes expire
I’ll pass this test I will not rest, though I be tried by fire.

Yes, one day I’ll home again, to she who is my life,
And we will live forever more as husband and as wife.

Author notes

The knight sat beside the road, his helmet rested on the log beside him and an engraving in his hand. A tiny wooden box with a carved lithograph of a rose and a dove reminded him of the maiden he had promised himself to. In his hand, also, was the veil she had tied on his arm the day he went off to defend the realm. Now, with the bloodiest battle having been fought, he allowed his mind to wander back to the lady of his heart and the song meandered from his memories to the forefront.

I love stories like this and to read them in a perfectly rhymed verse is a real treat. I got the feeling that it's the Lady that keeps him going and that brings a warm smile to the heart.
