The Winter Artist

Stand and wonder at the beauty that the Winter season brings
the starkness of the colder, shorter days,
fill your heart with happy birdsong as the chirpy robin sings
and Nature's whitest blanket softly lays.

You know that many days are filled with grey and cloudy skies
that hide the sun which gives you warmth and light,
though on a crispy day the picture clear before your eyes
Nature's beauty which inspires with sweet delight.

With Jack Frosts icy fingers tracing patterns all around
and breath escapes your lips in clouds of steam,
be careful where you tread for there is danger on the ground
and Nature wears the mantle of a dream.

The first few snowflakes fall and spread their wondrous magic spell
transformation of the landscape can be seen,
what lay beneath the mounds of snow no-one can really tell
and Nature paints the canvas white and clean.

To see the first Spring flowers as they push up through the snow
is sure to warm the coldest Winter heart,
or see the laughing children with their faces all aglow
and watch a New Year Cycle from the start.

Ummm...Wow this is really amazing. You make winter sound like such a beautiful thing. Winter has always been dreamy for me, but this makes it so much more than that.

"And Nature paints the canvas white and clean." This is such a beautiful line full of imagery.

Wonderful work! Thank you for sharing this

This is a very soothing write, and feels so warm in spite of the bitter and cold weather, the images you ahve painted here are marvellous, and it can soothe the coldest heart. Besides, what would be more marvellous than having the holiday season in winter, all this brings such delight to the hearts, just as your write does!

Brilliant piece and thanks for sharing this warmth with us,

Some beautiful imagery here. I love your rhyme, it's not overly predictable like 'time and lime' or something like that. Realistic imagery and a lovely topic. I just love nature, it's a beauty in which we cannot manafacture.

Just a thought. How about ruffled robin, instead of chirpy? Birds ruffle to stay warm and the song meme is already strong. Possessive for Icy jack...

What is the danger? slipping? I don't live in snow ever. I am in deep south. We had one day that snowed profusely and blanketed the ground, but it didn't last the day. Here is one of my shaped poems

An elegantly feminine treatment of the winter season. Favorite lines abound in every direction. Please don't tell me that you're already seeing snow where you're at! It was 73 deg in northern snow-prone Michigan yesterday. Any snowflake with the temerity to fall yesterday would have seen his / her plans melt before his very eyes! Hmmm... determining the sex of snowflakes... now there's potential poetic fodder if I ever uttered any!

This is such an accurate portrayal, and yet quite mystical. Lovely word choices, lovely rhymes which never seem forced. While it was unseasonably warm here today (72 F.) this makes me long for the colder days I know are coming...that season with a beauty you have captured so well.
