Running

The first thing that I become aware of
is a sound
a pounding
constant.

The next thing is that I am running
first this way then that way.

The next thing is that I am afraid.
My pulse rate is climbing.
My breathing is coming out in gasps.
My hands are sweating.
My thoughts are panicked.

I try to make sense of all of this.
But I can't.
I only know that someone,
something is following me
and that I must escape.

I stumble
catch myself
pause only to catch my breath
take stock of myself.
Am I all here.

I scream as something
cold,
clammy,
and evil
grab me on the arm.

I scream again and again
until finally
I hear someone call my name.

I start
open my eyes
and look up at my mother.
She has worry written all over her.

She sits next to me on the bed
holding me tight
as I shiver away my nightmare.

    Wow, this is really great!
I love that you wrote it from a child's
    perspective. Well done my friend!
