In an existence forgotten
she cries...
lost in silence, a world unknown
memories once brilliant
like a rainbow
now faded yesterdays,
small glimpses
enlightenment on the past
she struggles, panic-prone
to recall time elapsed
searching her mind
for evidence of those
claiming to be her family
though in her delirium
her children are still babies
she has been taken from
she cries...
grieving over her tremendous loss
strangers intrude her mourning
wishing for recognition
still she cries...
convinced time hasn't
slipped so briskly
aged immortality
bound in persistent awareness
now abandoned
by all she once loved
without understanding
she cries..

Prompt: Behind dulled blue eyes
This prompt reminded me of my great grandmother who suffers from alzheimer's and I wrote about her. She often thinks her children are babies and calls my mom saying someone took them. She is so convinced at times her tears can almost convince me. It is heartbreaking to watch this. Me being her great granddaughter, she doesn't know now who I am. This started off slowly, forgetting things like where she put her purse or keys. Then all of a sudden, within just a few short months most memories are lost. She has some good days where if you remind her who you are she knows. But most of the time she doesn't. She has a baby picture hanging on her wall of my uncle, who died about 7 years ago at the age of 36. She stares at the picture and if you ask her why she is staring she will tell you everytime "I don't know who that baby is but he is the most beautiful baby I've ever seen" He was her 1st grandchild and she cherished him. So I think maybe, somewhere deep in her disease, not all is forgotten.

This is a heartache piece of a write, but a beam of light there at the end, as you say, maybe not all is forgotten. Thanks for sharing, and this moved me indeed.
Dad.
