last year I read of Igbo culture
which is somewhere lost in the foliage
of Nigerian history
you narrated solemnly
and there was another end
of something people would hardly know
I smiled at the sound of it
there was an epiphany
behind each utterance.
we tried to capture tones; music
and like butterflies inside the glassjars
they slowly
died;
on our way back:
I realised how much
of a cutdown-half-gutted redwood
I was-
fleshed out of humanity
and its roots
[Igbo was just an instance
amongst millions of empty photoframes]
we both realised newer guilts.
which is somewhere lost in the foliage
of Nigerian history
you narrated solemnly
and there was another end
of something people would hardly know
I smiled at the sound of it
there was an epiphany
behind each utterance.
we tried to capture tones; music
and like butterflies inside the glassjars
they slowly
died;
on our way back:
I realised how much
of a cutdown-half-gutted redwood
I was-
fleshed out of humanity
and its roots
[Igbo was just an instance
amongst millions of empty photoframes]
we both realised newer guilts.

"and there was another end

Adore the italicization...and BAH, this is so good; it makes me think of exclusivity.
"I smiled at the sound of it
there was an epiphany
behind each utterance."
Too good for me not to have reposted for you to see.
"butterflies inside the glassjars"
The non-spacing for "glassjars" is AWESOME!!! Not sure why I love it so much, but yeah.

Last line...it's so poignantly perfect
that you could bake pancakes with it.
(If you don't like pancakes...well
)
So good.
Congrats on the Gold
Jessica

I agree with Nicolette...this is one of your best [that I've read] I love the culture lost in a foliage of history...and the butterflies in glass jars...this is excellent.
