Old age is coming quickly now
Way past three score and ten
Last time I had a wild night out,
Well, I can't remember when
I recall all the excitement
Of being young and fit
And the many times I ended up
In a deep and murky pit.
Mind, I wasn't lonely there
My friends were all around
We must have been a rowdy bunch
Our feet not on firm ground
Life was good in those days of fun
The rules were quite relaxed
You kept most of your pay check
Paid only a little in tax.
No need for use of drugs and such
To ease the strains of life
Enjoy yourself as we all did
With perhaps, a little strife.
Time moves on, there is change,
One's responsibility grows
Courtesy has packed up and left
Where, no one really knows.
We seem to think in dollar signs
Not how to help our friends
So more now live in poverty
Why can't we make amends?
Can't we go back from whence we came
Take the better things we had
Bring them to this day and age
Our kids would be less sad
I'm glad I was born at the right time
When the pace of life was slow
Excitement was there for the taking
Each time with an out of breath glow.
I reminisce now of the old days
Write of the joy that we shared
I won't speak of the hard times
That hurts too much to be bared
Notes: Memory is wonderful in that it cannot remember the pain one suffers through life.
As old age creeps upon us, we remember the things which gave us pleasure and joy.

Ah yes, yesterday...how we all pine for it. I have noticed that I am starting to write poems that are based on times past as well. I think people generally are becoming much more materialistic. I normally blame Margaret Von Thatchler for that though.

The past had it own problems but we should have learned from them and kept the better things, sadly, I think we have thrown the baby out with the bathwater.
I note that when we refer to the past we do not usually highlight the hard times.
Thank you, my friend, for commenting.

This was a pleasure to read, very well-written. A great summation of the things that make a life good, without forgetting the hard times, but letting them stay in the background.

Everyone has hard times and good times. The strength we acquire overthe years is what gives us the power to keep the hard times in the background and look forward with a more positive attitude. Many thanks for your support, I appreciate it very much.

So True!
A thoughtful reminisce on life and how it has changed. But by all means SPEAK of the hard times, so that we can put our current woes into perspective. They are the times I love to hear about. With my own father surviving the great depression I always have his stories as a benchmark to remind me...life's not too bad...alby

I was just a kid in primary school when WW2 started but I have some recollections of the depression of the 30's. My memory goes back before refridgerators, washing machines and sewerage disposal; back to the days when there was only one car owner in the street. We are much better off today. However the business of living and the pace of living have both changed so much that old fashioned courtesies seem to have become a rarity.
I would love to see a return of honesty, integrity and courtesy in all facets of business, politics and everyday life. I shall live in hope.
I look forward to you constructive comments and appreciate them. -

I totally agree. I've always said it doesn't take much to be nice.

you are so right about what this world has become for the youth
we are all consumers of commodities
-
-
The media refersto us all as 'consumers', so that is what we have become. massive pressures on kids to consume this or that or whatever so some one can make a profit.
I appreciate your kind words and wish todays youth did not have to face so much stress just to stay alive.

Thank you kind sir. There are many like us who are getting on and would love to leave a legacy of something positive for the time we spent here. Our times were much more relaxed and as a result we were more placid ourselves. Oh for the good parts of 'the good old days', to leave for all to enjoy.

Bob
Those were the days my friend. And now your words exco of those lost times when friends were special and life was meant for us all. It was we and now it is ME.

I remember when the second world war started. I learned of it at primary school. The changes from then to now are quite amazing. If we could only take the good bits from then and transpose them to now, we would have a wonderful world. Such is life, my friend.

A lovely poem, Bob. I enjoyed reading how things were in your younger years and things have changed and become more me me me. Your flow was excellent. Just one thing i had a problem with. the second last verse/ last line throws me. I just can't seem to get it to sit properly. Just a suggestion, but i would change it to 'Each time with an out of breath glow'. Apart from this, it was a delight to read.

Ah Jackie, the good old days. We only talk about the happy times of the good old days, but they were not always happy. We could benefit a bit from the experiences though.

Hi Julie, many thanks for your kind comments. My muse has been on holiday for a while and I've been going through old photos, hence the trip down memory lane. There really has been some massive changes since I was just a little guy.
