A Simple Man

A simple man tells the truth,
he knows not how to lie.
He always does what momma says,
‘til the sweet bye-and-bye.

The gambler hides his cards,
in hopes you cannot see.
He’s proud of his trickery,
your cash he soon sets free.

Can you guess which it is?
One has friends, one does not?
The open minded simple man,
or the mindless, selfish lot?

Lord, give me the simple man
and cast the Devil back to hell.
Find the man who tells the truth,
and rest easy for a spell.

Author notes

It is hard to find truth in a phletora of lies, but it can be done.

Nice theme, one doesn't happen to read much about truth and lies, and more particularly about open minded simple man and a mindless selfish lot... lol Or probably I have not been reading things since an age

Anyhow, I liked the way it narrated a story and your desire... The third stanza, beginning two lines were nice and thoughtful...

    Thanks for sharing.

Some approach through thought of lie
    and wonder what when wrong
    When the consequences come
and comes the end of song

Some approach with heart held out
    still hiding seeks of mind
And then at end the same result
    they surely are to find

Some hold no thoughts, of what will come
and so don't try to bend
    Another wants unto their own
    in seeking love or friend

They take the world for what it is
by choice they seek but good
And in the end they find at last
they get just what they should

    Happy Holidays my friend...

    cleverly written...wonderfully spun.....
I agree.....how to spot the truth...
    in those who surround.

    especially when presently we live
    in "politically correct" times....
i think we're all going through a mighty
    transition right now....

have to live the words of truth,
    not just speak them!
and the crash of the markets...
    really caught our attention...
    right where it hurts..our wallets
    and jobs!

    well done poet!
    well done!

It is hard to find truth in many things these days. But yes the greedy man is one least likely to tell you what that truth may be. The simple man has nothing to lose so he tells you the entire truth. Good write
