Aussie Halloween

Aussie Halloween

Last night was Halloween in Aussie land
and Jen came here to spend the night with me
we packed the bags with sweets to have on hand
when children came, their faces bright with glee.

A knock upon our door – we hurried out
to see these cheeky grins; they were our first.
“A trick or treat” they all began to shout.
They were so cute we thought our hearts would burst.

We held our basket out for them to pick
the ones they liked the best, the girl in blue
she said ours were the best so far for tricks.
I said I’d take a photograph for you.

Jen said it’s nice to see them having fun
like children should just as we used to do
and, with a smile and wave, they turned to run
out to their Mum and she was smiling too.

They came until the light began to fade
and all the sweets we had on hand gone.
We came inside - a cuppa tea we made
and said we’d do it every year hereon.

What joy it gave us all on Friday night
The costumes chosen were a great delight.

Author notes

Jen and I had so much fun chatting to the children and seeing their costumes and the smiles upon their faces.

It's always a great thing to see children having fun. I think with the way society has changed it's often saddened me to think that there must be fear, especially at the holidays. It sounds like you had a blast and this is a wonderful, upllifting piece for halloween I adore it. Blessings and hugs, Gypsy

This is the way Halloween should be, all those little ghost and goblins, ballarinas and pirates running happily from door to door collecting their treats.

This is a sweet poem you two have written. It holds warmth and pleasure from beginning to end

This is a memorable evening, it sounds like you two had fun with the game of Halloween. Your lines and images are gentle, even if the costumes were meant to frighten. A cup of tea together caps the evening perfectly. Nicely written!

:-) I've never really experienced much of a Halloween in Australia, save for one night of trick or treating my school organised when I lived in Tibooburra. Good to read something about the day from an Aussie perspective. :-)

    A loving familiar tale,
for it feels as if you live
    just down the street,
as we shared the same fun
a world away. We were blessed
    with a surprising 70 degrees
so no bundling up the little ones
    under their cute costumes.

    My daughter and family, including
Jake the pup, and my buddy who
rushed here straight from his job
all enjoyed a big Halloween dinner
after the trickster hours were over.

My thanks that my energy held
    to put it all together.

Dear AJ, we did have fun on Friday night seeing all the smiling faces and the costumes, we certainly will do it from hereon and make it a tradition. The little girl in blue made us laugh when she said ours were the best.
    Love Jen
