The Truth about Sophie Sil Mamet

Twas cold, and our breaths did frost,
the day they lay old Sophie in the moss,
on that hill at the edge of Bordeaux.

“Who was she”, the new one inquired?
“Not she but he”, the answer required,
“gone to wherever the warlocks doth go.”

“Ah, good”, thought he of the village,
“he's gone now, a new grave to pillage”.
“When the moon sinks low, I shall return”.

At the top of the stone the writing did say,
“Here lie the remains of Sophie Sil Mamet.”
“I'll have his gold”, said he, name of Nocturne.

Late in the night he went for his fill,
the things that happened are related still.

Howling winds and strobing light,
screams of pain all through the night,
and the people lay still in their towers.

The sheriff came 'round the very next morn,
looking for proof for the people forlorn;
on Mamet's grave finding black flowers.

The one called Nocturne was no where about,
“He's taken the day off”, someone did shout;
but his body was found in a place of remote.

Lying in a ditch aside his good spade,
in his hand a crumpled letter was laid;
“I am Mephistoles”, was written on the note.

“Who's the killer”, the people did say,
“Why I do believe it was Mr. Mamet!”

Author notes

Poor Nocturne, he paid dearly for his greed. The truth is oft stranger than fiction...I'm not lying!

    This is a great story. Truth is indeed stranger than fiction but sometimes it's hard to tell one from 'tother. They both make equally good stories, I think, and after a while, it doesn't matter which is which.
