Ordinary People

It is the common things
That people do
Day after humdrum day
That are exalted.

My eyes were easily fooled
By gloss and glitter
While God attended to
The progress of a mop
Past lonely prison cells.

No need to hoist the bells
So high atop the steeple
God’s ear is good enough
To hear the tired sighs
Of ordinary people.

well, it's the common things that people do that NEED to be exalted anyway. Curiously, I find that is often true in examining the lives of the saints. Sometimes they were exalted for things like passing out bread to the poor or sharing their cloak with a cold person. Stuff that ordinary people do everyday. I do love the bells in the steeple ringing out over the land, though. They are uplifting to hear.
