I got a brother in that land

When we, in innocent throws of youth, ran screaming in the grass
playing games of cops and robbers, chasing, tagging, fast
we laughed together on each shoulder
and weathered all the storms
of screaming fights and drunken nights
our parents made our norm

we watched the stories unfold before our eyes in disbelief
and together, forever, you and I escaped into the screen
we cried for fear when he would punch
and smiled at all the inside jokes
played make believe for slight reprieve
from our family going up in smoke

and brother you and I would sing
that song we heard once on the tv
the soulful words still echo in my mind

I wonder where you've gone to now
does that song remind you how
close we were or did you leave it behind?

Cause I know I got a brother in that land
where I'm bound, no tears, no pain,
and you're that brother, take my hand
because I wish our lives were still the same
and we still dreamed of freedom and fame
of leaving this little town for good.
We'd get in a car and drive for the coast
the way we always said we would.

I know we had our arguments, I know we had our fights,
but brother, I'm your sister and we have to make this right.

I don't want to wait for all eternity to unfold
before you and I can get past the past
and let go these grudges we both hold.

So, if you can see the words, hear them screaming from the page
call me, write me, say whatever you feel you have to say.

Because I miss you.
Little brother, I miss you.

Please, if you could, would you please come back home?
Because brothers and sisters aren't meant to take on life alone,
and after all we lived through, all we've seen,
I'm not afraid to say that I was caught up in between
the loyalty to family and loyalty to me.
But brother, we used to be so tight,
and I wish I had the courage to call you up tonight.

  • Sentimental Journey

This seams to be a recurring theme as I scan through peoples recent poems. I can't imagine going through this without knowing about God who loves me and his peace that passes understanding. Very well written.

    • Thank you for your thoughts! I'm glad you enjoyed it. God and I have had a rough path... but He has never failed to comfort me when I've been willing to lay down that pesky pride and ask Him.
