I really like this. You used simple phrases that really capture the reader with emotion. The sad ending of "too late" is sad, but wraps up the writing nicely. It also relates to the quote very clearly. Nice title as well. Good luck in the contest!

I love the idea - there is a lot to be said for following one's instincts. We humans have an immense gift for prevarication (and I am probably one its greatest exponents!).
Unsure about the second line - 'too soon' might work better in this context and contrasts nicely with the final line.
