I remember when
She says
Lips painted pink
Gaudy
Past all hope of beauty
I remember when there were ration books.
Were you there then?
She says.
Of course not.
I remember it all like it was yesterday
She nods surely
I remember being in love, I remember the war, I remember sherbet lemons
I remember when
She accusses me of not remembering
I don't remember when they went to war
I don't remember listening to it all on the radio
I don't remember rolling bandages
I beg her to think after the war.
Remember Grandpa? Albert? You married him
She remembers loving a Johnny who died.
Remember your daughter? Susan?
She had a friend called Susan when she was at school, she says.
Remember me?
No.
Her hands are like leaves or leather
Her hair so thin.
I remember when...it was like yesterday.
But she doesn't remember me.
