Icy ears ache as down the sidewalk
she travels, no destination in mind.
Just a need to be in the air and wind,
Others walk, as if they were blind.
They don't feel the rough teeth of
a wind that howls like a banshee.
Don't open their mouths to take
in great gulps of howling glee.
She is the child of the season,
delighted to leave fall behind.
Eager to face another snowfall,
glad to feel air clearing her mind.
Leaves whistle and whisper as
they run past her, daring her to race,
touching her cheeks and bringing
a glow to her excited young face.
Let others worship Spring or Summer,
let the lovers of fall keep their choice,
she just wants to be in the winter,
to hear its marvelous, strong voice.
