The Soldier in the Corner

I've carried my rifle for too long,
worn these boots,
placed my Nation's flag in place,
and still here long past my due.

I don't know if I can stop.
I feel as if there is still something I can do
I've seen too much, but somehow it doesn't stop me;
my life for another, my will takes a back seat
I don't go home because I feel as if it won't be there
if I quit.

Few in years, or so my body tells you, but what I've seen
my eyes reflect. Once you see them you would never guess
my age, the soldier is timeless
the life I have will end one day, weather I die with my boots on
or when I'm old in my bed, I will make the time I have worth it.
I will be the soldier, a boots to the ground grunt,
ever the the soldier in the corner.

Author notes

I noticed the Specialist to the left of the photo. He looked like he'd been there for a while instead of just arriving. So I ran with that idea.
