A red sun sets.
An angry west wind
Sends dust and debris
Across the October sky.
Summer is over
Before we are ready.
It fucking always rained
Or seemed like it.
The lake never warmed up
So swimming sucked ass.
Stuck inside the rec center
With no money
And piss-warm tang.
Playing Yahtzee and Risk
Like political prisoners,
Goddamn stalag inmates.
We are paroled,
Just as summer ends,
And allowed to
Spend the night
In the dark and cold,
Puking and starving
Like lifelong junkies
Dumped in the alley
In the wet leaves.
We are sustained by
Misfit love
And hatred of conformers
As we feel the cold air
Penetrate our lungs
With the deadly taste
Of winter’s indifference.
Hungry for life
That passed us by
Without a second look.
