Mammoth of Today

The african elephant, a matriarchial phenomena
Gregarious, magnificent, from the aged proboscidea
A descendant of the mammoth which does not exist today
Slain by man for the ivory they display
Essential to ecology maintaning a floristic composition
So that other lesser creatures may enjoy its devastation
of trees that are uprooted,
and a new cycle to begin
for the browsers, life anew within
Acute sense of hearing, yet their eyes are very dim
when faced with danger, they become extremely grim
Agression is not within their nature
but they are fierce to protect
Watch! for the ears, they tell all, in respect
Ears held outward is a sign he is enraged
He will make a mock charge, as if he's uncaged
Trumpeting loudly, kicking up the dust!
A magnificent specimen, do not betray his trust?
It is an honour to view him, this animal so grand
Do not restrict him with fences,
He needs to roam the land
The Elephant
God's Majestic Creature

Author notes

I have been privileged to have seen many breeding herd of elephants

    Brava! "God's Majestic Creature"

That they are; and although I have never had the priviledge of seeing a wild, healthy elephant in his/her natural habitat, I have seen photos and film footage. Magnificent they are! I so admire and adore these noble beings. The more we learn about them, the more we are awed by them.

I love all the points that you make about the elephant! You apparently know a lot about elephants, or you did your research. This is very informative. Thank you for entering this beautiful poem into the contest. I really enjoyed reading it!
