He was a toddler when our father
died young of heart disease.
For years after he would get on his hands
and knees and pound
his head on the hard floor,
much the same way as one bites
down hard on a toothache to relieve the pain.
No one shed a tear for him
He was a teen when he was shot
in the chest with a shotgun.
The doctors said, he should have died
but he was strong.
He spent years in the hospital
and underwent dozens of surgeries
to restore his arm that was almost
severed from his body.
While in the hospital,
his love of his life dumped him
with the words
“I don’t want to be married to only half a man.”
He lived his remaining life in emotional
and physical pain until his untimely death
from heart failure at a young age like our father.
And the Angels wept.
died young of heart disease.
For years after he would get on his hands
and knees and pound
his head on the hard floor,
much the same way as one bites
down hard on a toothache to relieve the pain.
No one shed a tear for him
He was a teen when he was shot
in the chest with a shotgun.
The doctors said, he should have died
but he was strong.
He spent years in the hospital
and underwent dozens of surgeries
to restore his arm that was almost
severed from his body.
While in the hospital,
his love of his life dumped him
with the words
“I don’t want to be married to only half a man.”
He lived his remaining life in emotional
and physical pain until his untimely death
from heart failure at a young age like our father.
And the Angels wept.

Strong write. Full of imagery. Thank you for sharing this story with me. Best of luck and may your ink never cease to flow.

This fine free verse has all the teethers of a reality based good story line attached .It captivates the reader's attention by virtue of suspense in anticipation of the finality. It holds us with references to "arms of an angel" quite literally. You can't make something so poignantly gripping up. Unless it has it's roots in some fraction bases of truth. Sorry to read in comment that it is indeed a true saga in the author's life. How very sad. I'm sure he knew love of family and his brother though. Because I know this fine author/writer/artist and master carpenter. It's enhanced in it's gravity all the more. But it's one of those well crafted tales that would be powerful if even not. Nice work my friend in telling your story.

This touches my heart more deeply than you will
ever know. He had a hard life then he died, it
just doesn't seem fair. Kind of like my own brother.

Such a sad poem, Richard. Your poem is filled with the emotions of tragedy and heartbreak.
Is this about your brother? It has the feel of being a family write, personal and evocative of the pain suffered not only by the man but by those close to him.

Generation repeats
I felt the tradedy of how on a spiritual note how generational curses can repeat itself if we are not ones to pray and hope to see it change, so yes angels have cried for such lives...blessings.
