self-destruction

                                                            first snow
                                                melting in the morning rain
                                                      -winter will be long

in the mirror
what did Mohamed Atta see?
Samson
pulling down the temple on the Philistines?
in his vacant eyes
and expression void of character
what did he see ?
Saladin?
what redemption did he find
in the moment of his murderous self-immolation?

                                                  beyond moonlight's reach
in the midnight of a well
                                                    -waters cold and deep

Freud said
in his endless musing
that
within each one of us is a germ
a germ of self-destruction
that cocaine
       cigars
       peppermints (bad for the teeth)
are expressions of self loathing

sometimes a cigar is just a cigar
but was Alexander perhaps
not trying to conquer the world
but to escape from it?

                                                    the storm has cast
all the cherry blossoms to ground
                                                -who shall put them back?

...there are hours
when one may seem to be
the only silhouette that is moving on the street
a dog may bark
but what does he really have to say?

did Mohamed Atta's mother love him?
I can still hear her weeping
Mohamed
Mohamed

Why?

Powerful thoughts here. The questions are penetrating, and gripping. The unique form you use is both a little disturbing and mesmorizing, that is, the way you contrast allusions to mass killing with such incredibly beautiful verses. This one is haunting.

They say to really upset someone, screw with their fantasy. What fantasy did Atta expect? That America would do anything else besides shrug off the hit and get angry?

I love this piece, as I admire all of your works where you insert the perfection of thought of haiku within the opening out of thought of the longer verses. Much to ponder here, but the biggest impact on me is the compassion shown in the image of the weeping mother, and the final question.

Quite a moving piece of work you have here. Very deep and very thought provoking. I think my favourite part would have to be Freud. I often wonder whether we are all perhaps just germs in a petrie dish and someone is studying us. This is an excellent write, the setout well done and every word used sat together perfectly. Good luck in the contest.

Hard to fathom why Freud saw us as germs or perhaps its because they are so complex to study and understand. I think Alexander only broke Bucephaelus's spirit and got roped into to being a leader, think he would have been happy being a horse whisperer, would have survived to so much better that way. C

      Thank's for your thoughts, "Cannonsfire".
The line about a "germ of self-destruction" was alluding to Freud's theory of a "Death Wish":The notion that within all living creatures the is a deep desire to return to the peace of nonexistance. This, Freud postulated could explains much of our self-distructive behavour; even our abuse of pleasurable stimuli.Frued not only used cocaine and enjoyed cigars but is said to have had a bit of a sweet tooth, too:so I picked up on these as examples of self-distructive habits.
My knowlege ,"Cannonsfire" on the subject is very pedestrian...I'm really asking questions in the poem rather than offering answers.
