Upon an icy, stormy night
Without a hope, without my sight,
I stumble through the forest wild
My heart cannot be reconciled.
The burning tears stream down my face,
As I reach the forgotten place,
And stare down into silent well,
Where dark things live, in evil dwell.
Those evil things do scorch my heart,
Yet hope from my mind will not part;
Until upon the blazing breeze,
I hear the words my soul to freeze.
His last words that to me he spoke,
My mind repeats in painful croak:
“You’ll never be the one for me,
Now let me go! I must be free.”
And then I do surrender love,
The skies to crack in storm above,
Dark things rejoice in evil song,
I hear hell’s sickened death drum gong.
From that well crawls, oh mercy, Lord!
All things vile, evil, abhorred,
They surround me with slimy skin,
‘Thy must become our evil kin.’
Yet as the scorching rain pelts down,
I scream in pain, I tear my gown,
And cry, ‘I’ll never join you, no!
My pain’s my own; now leave me, go!’
The evil things do screech, ‘Then die!'
And as the lightening tears the sky,
They rip from my cold chest my heart,
My cries of pain rend hope apart.
My heart within that hellish well,
Does sink to where evil things dwell,
The hole in me does burn on fire,
As I forsake my last desire.
And as final breath burns body,
I hear my lover call to me;
He tears his way through forest wild,
His guilt cannot be reconciled.
He has now come to seek me out;
His split from me he’d come to doubt.
Yet all his hope does now vanish,
My body life does now banish.
He screams a scream of endless pain,
He feels my hurt, himself he’ll blame,
The rose he’d brought to show remorse,
Withers, becomes rotten and coarse.
He lifts me softly, and with ease,
Kisses my head, the world does freeze,
My eyes do shut in endless sleep,
He casts me into that well deep.
