One Hundred Readers

One hundred readers sitting on the shelves
who like to see when a poet digs and delves,
think how poetry reveals them to themselves
before they comment.

They are waiting for that perfect piece of art,
the most succinct and fine effusion of my heart,
waiting, waiting, waiting for me to start
before they comment.

The Sahara will bloom with honey clover,
the waves will reduce the cliffs of Dover,
the inferno of the damned will certainly freeze over
before they comment.

I'm not sure what they are looking for, I do know from my experience that after a while they get bored and stop coming. I'm not sure I would be able to give them what they desire anyway, even if I cared to do so...but I would guess something salacious, written in a simple style...the other thing they seem to like is pretense...they seem to suck that up, but I also think mainly they want something short and graphic so they can comment quickly and move on...they do want people to return the favor.

Or maybe they are just looking for friendship...and each of those things I've mentioned is not a strong suit of mine...so I wait for Ima and company to come by and tell me how brilliant I am...and they never fail to please me.

Want people to comment, even those who never stop by...write something you don't want people to read...the little devils show up in droves then!

Thanks for your thoughts, Yem. We do not know what they do not say; if they want something different, it is up to them to say so. Besides, we must write what is inside us, they can write what they need said. It's quite a silly game we play here, isn't it?

Ah, Margaret, you pierce the heart of the matter,
not letting any readers off the hook to scatter!

You do indeed create "that perfect piece of art"
proving you are clever, witty and smart!

Dear Sweetpea, I must confess I haven't been commenting on most of my favourites poems. One reason is a lot of them have disappeared..Gone, but you my friend I'll always be here for you and if I can understand the message you are conveying in your poem I will comment. Sometimes they don't mean what I think they do and then I feel awful when I'm wrong, but I will try in the future my sweet.
You are dear to me and it's a friendship I wouldn't want to lose. If I have the message wrong, forgive me sweetheart.
I loved reading your poem though.
    Love Joan

Dear Joan, I have noticed your silence - it is tough to lose so many, one by one. We must concentrate on what we have. If ever I have gotten too odd or arcane, drop me a note and we can talk about it. If I made you feel awful for a comment, I'm sorry, I must have been fussed about something else!

Sweetpea, you have never said anything to upset me, I just realize after reading the comments that I often have it wrong. Your poems are always excellent, it's just me and my thick head sometimes. I can never give a critical comment as you know and I do love reading all your poems, so, in future if I don't understand them I will ask you.

    I better comment then!!!
A theme that on AP too many know, the number of reads and the number of comments rarely seem to be closely connected. The meter his informal but excellent and the rhyming and content match beautifully, a delightful entry.

Thanks very much for your comment, applause and HM, Jeff! I'm glad you called this 'informal' meter - I can do iambic or whatever, but I didn't want to. About the content, it's not just the clicks, but the favorites list that I don't understand the way that they do.

    I wish I were ...

    more often one of them,

not those who leave sans comment,
but those who read at all...
    Many poems disappear before

I get time to find again

what had waited there. A moment
    to write as some prodigal
who, still wishing I had more

    than a regretful requiem.

    ----------------
    But then, when I've competed,
    the only comment I'd get?
    "Seen by judge."

    Terry

Dear Terry, I know that judge, and I never see her anymore.
Thank you for commenting when it is difficult for you.

    I Confess...

... I do not comment enough at all!

    BUT I LOVED THIS!

I'll have to try this kind of form- very... appealing to my poetic senses.

Thank you for your comment and applause! The favorites list on AP is called "friends", but that is not how it feels to me - hence this poem. I'm happy that you enjoyed reading, but happier you said so!
The form comes from Jeff's contest, and I like it too.

I absolutely love the rhyme and the style of this work! It's a magnificent piece!!! You used amazing imagery in the last stanza and the rhyme doesn't seem forced.

    Keep writing!
