Aunt Winnie’s sleep tonic

Boiling in a cauldron,
whipping up some brew
Never are they remedies,
or ink for a tattoo

Fourteen hints of lizard breath,
dropped one by one
Six parts quarter moon beam,
one part ray of sun

The stinger of a platypus,
all the poison drained
Two parts ancient cephalopod,
complete with black ink stain

The hair off of tsetse fly,
not the nose, but back
Three shaves off a warthog’s tail,
one part of attack

Start the mix one cold dark night,
sometime after ten
Stir it every thirteen seconds,
and share it with a friend

Stir in cream the whipping kind,
beat ‘til frothy white
Serve it warm with crumpet cakes,
for a pre bed time delight

It will keep the ghosts away,
so you can get a restful sleep
You won’t recall a single thing,
as you go counting nightly sheep

In the morn refreshed you’ll feel,
as if you slept the whole night through
How will you explain those brand new piercings,
and that giant tattoo

I think I met Aunt Winnie sometime around 1973. This explains a lot!
This poem has a fine rhythmic flow to it, very poetic, with imaginative but unforced rhyme.
The 3 stanzas which list the ingredients of the tonic are the most enjoyable to me. They draw on comfortingly familiar folkloric formulas for such recipes, but they are delightfully original in their specifics.

Class we see here a remarkably weaved potion with thorough detail to particulars. As we all know the nose hair of a tsetse fly can cause warts on the witch creating the potion and the student has been very clear not to use tsetse fly nose hair. Well done! We all also know how hard it is to get the stinger off a platypus also so there are points here for difficulty as well.

    Fourteen hints of lizard breath,
    dropped one by one
    Six parts quarter moon beam,
    one part ray of sun

Now if you do attempt this potion and reach this point class do not forget to put a protective charm around yourself during this part and try not to make fun of Sam the ghost if you see him floating around without his eyebrows on

High marks for content and imagery. 5 Chokolate frogs and 15 points are awarded to Griffindor
