Vows to Cherish

When we were kids and I said that
"holding hands were for married people,"
I wasn't ready to let boys in.
I wasn't ready to let you in.
I was afraid of catching cooties.
Even though I never showed it, or said it,
the entire time we've known each other,
I loved you.
I wasn't aware if such feelings and it took me quite a while to figure it out, and I'm both sorry and glad.
I'm sorry it took me so long when you've known all along
and I thank you for being so patient.
I'm glad, in part, because it gave us the needed time to
experience, learn, and grow- to become who we are today.
We were each others' salvation, hopes, dreams, and prayers.
You were the first and only one to break down my barrier
and my first and only one who truely loves me.
You're my prince charming, my knight in shinning armor.
You are my Richard as I am your Kahlan.
You're my mentor, my love, and my soul mate.
You are my Disney movie brought to life.
I just can not express how much you mean to me and how much I love you.
The only way that comes close to expressing that is the way I look at you when you are looking me in the eyes.
Three simple words which aren't simple at all just doesn't seem enough for expressing what we have.
I love you, Austin, and I'm ready to hold your hand.

Author notes

I wrote this on July 17, I'm not sure what year. At 12:08 am. It just came to me and the wedding day hasn't come yet.

Awww I adore this! The comparison to what we are like as kids is just fantastic.

I love this bit of the poem:
"I'm sorry it took me so long when you've known all along
and I thank you for being so patient.
I'm glad, in part, because it gave us the needed time to
experience, learn, and grow- to become who we are today."

I think we are need time to discover who we are.

Thank you for entering, good luck and well done on such an amazing write.

A very heartfelt free verse, clearly shows how your relationship has matured through the years. You do a nice job of expressing your love through gratitude and being able to see the path that has brought you both to this point if your lives. Very pretty poem and I wish you all the best. Congratulations!

I think this is just lovely. While it may not be peppered with 'poetic devices', it is spoken truly from the heart, and carries the reader along with the intensity of your emotions.

Given your impending nuptuals, it would be a wonderful piece for you to read as you exchange your vows.

My wife and I have recently celebrated our 30th Wedding Anniversary, I wish for you and Austin as much joy and happiness as we have been blessed with over these years.
