Through the sternum bars of cracked protection,
my heart cries out "Oh pain".
You called my name from the cogent earth,
and I fell for you.
You prattle on and on with your tales of woe -
a "tender" reminder with each breath.
Oh pain.
Oh pain, I dare not sneeze or cough
I dare not breathe a deep inhaling
for you are there.
You forage for attention through my wakefulness
You steal the spotlight in the gloaming
an ever present henchman that follows -
intruding upon my sacred space
Don't you have something better to do?
Oh pain.
Author notes
I fell Monday from chasing our dog and have been in pain ever since.

Sorry about the pain you're experiencing, but I enjoy the way you have "addressed" it. Ben Franklin spoke to his gout much as you have remonstrated with your aching ribs. This should resonate with many folks who talk to their emotions and sensations as if they were personalities rather than mere feelings.
