I once hoped to live like groups of hippies
that roam though the wide world almost unseen,
and search for eternal utopias
with just my band and brilliant tambourine.
We all would search to find sweet palaces
where peace would flourish and dear love was free,
but never would my lips kiss the pure earth
and contribute to the great jamboree.
I once wanted to live life unsettled,
I hoped my feet would never take root
in anyplace except in spirit and heart,
my closed mouth with whispers of change grew mute.
But now I know to settle is to give,
the roots of my tree so fertile in love
will plant seeds in the soil of the world
to nest and cradle the beautiful dove.
