Schadenfreude (The Projectionist)

I took nothing.
You drove him away.
Thanks for reminding him
Why he left!
Enjoy our happiness.

Author notes

My partner's mother is an alcoholic and a walking textbook on projection. My best revenge is refusing to conform to her pre-conceived notions about me, but I'm still glad she's incapable of behaving in her own best interests. The more insane and aggressive she acts, the more she screams and calls me a worthless junkie, the more determined he is to come back to me. I don't have to do anything at all, or say anything harsh -- she's already torturing herself far worse than I ever could even if I stretched myself to the bloodiest, sickest corners of sadism.
