Arsenic drips down arthritic branches
(disguised as dewdrops)
to burn her waxen fingertips.
She tastes the poison and smiles,
a serpent upon her lips.
Raven feathers tickle her ankles,
leaves tumble like a magical summoning
to build her a cloak
the colours of a sunset.
She bounds over frost-struck ground,
numbness enveloping her delicate toes
her cloak clinging to jagged stumps.
Her eyes are trapped in the blue moon,
and October beckons her home....
(to take wing
and explore
the skies)
...
But her heart lies on the ground,
whispering to the ants,
singing with the grass,
sacrificing herself to the oncoming threat
of winter.
...

The shadows move
a mysterious dance,
and as All Hallows Eve approaches,
the thermals lift her spirit
amongst the clouds again.

Author notes
Inspired by the contest, though granted, I was looking for a contest where I could use the edge of an autumnal theme. Enjoy reading... candy clouds of lullaby and all that jazz.
Eve, the Biblical view of the first woman, one with nature. Also a reference to All Hallows Eve... Halloween.
