Within the whited walls of every man,
Inside the athenaeum of each heart,
Atop a beam that stretches as a road
Two volumes wait, both destinies apart.
Where one resides, the mantel is brushed clean,
New dust all caught away by overuse;
The book itself quite filthy and well-worn,
So much one might consider it abuse.
The other shows sharp edges on each page
So crisp, no single earmark can be found;
No tears, nor stains of love grace it at all,
From long neglect, it wears a sooty gown.
Two novels on the shelf of every heart,
And no surprise which one is read the more.
Strong Flesh still guides the hand, though Spirit cries;
He chooses many times just as before.
We choose a book each moment of the day-
The titles? - "Pleasing God" and "Pleasing Self."
Oh, would to God that men would choose the right,
And just remove the worn one from the shelf!

Author notes
"Two choices rest upon the shelf-
Pleasing God or Pleasing Self..."
I heard this quote in an online sermon I listened to last night- GOOD STUFF.
Do you know where you're spending eternity? If not, ask me how you can know!

Beautiful!
A very nice poem! The rhythm and flow is excellent! The rhymes are not bad and not forced! Your subject and inspiration are perfect for such a cherished, emotion packed piece. I do like this poem -- it shows real talent and skill in our craft! Very good work!

"And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God, and books were opened. And another book was opened, which is the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to their works, by the things which were written in the books." (Rev. 20:12)
I love this piece Nat. Well done as usual.

Eternity seems an eternity away.
Nice job on the rhyme. I like it much. Great job.
And I know very well on where I stand to eternity.

That is a very good line and the premise of the poem is well formed. Your diction is good and the rhyme is well done too. The enjambment works and the meter is fair though a bit shaky. Nicely done. Peace
