We Shake the Earth and Pull Mountains Apart

Those fingers never did quite wrap all the way around
  the corners of the paper
where the majority rested.

We never did find out the truth
about whether or not the differences where good
or if we had simply gone out on our own
    like two young, wayward fools.

You never could sit beside me and simply feel,
as I ran my fingers through your hair
to find the place where you secrets hid themselves.

I never could be strong enough
or enough of who I'd said I'd be,
no matter how many prayers half my brain prayed
to keep us in the dreams.

Our hearts never matched the way I'd thought they would,
  with my still-shifting sandstone center
and your heavy, granite base.

So we've grown up separate, massive;
each old mountains, with lives that no one knows,
telling old stories to travelers as they pass onwards,
    into the setting sun.

Author notes

9) ‘How the old mountains drip with sunset’ (Emily Dickinson)

Take it as you want. At the time of writing it, I'm seeing maybe four different interpretations that I want people to catch. There's more, I'm sure. I'd love for anyone who wants to to post their interpretation, if only for my own enjoyment

This piece takes me to my natural father, who I didn't know until I was 18, and until then he didn't know of my existence. This piece pulls at those emotions. I like it.

    Thank you for sharing

This is a lovely take on the prompt. I see friend from youth, wayward in their beginnings, unafraid of life. They tempt love, but find it is not something they do together. Friendship finds they question what they are to the world. Hearts never matched the way they wanted them to. Grown and aged to be reminded of stories of youth they share with people that pass by in their lives, but hid truth in silence. Penned nicely.
