Seasons

i.

the rain is rolling down my window,
making puddles on the sill:
little ponds
swimming with dust and dirt.

i am thinking of you.

ii.

on sunny days
i am reminded of your orange sunglasses
and the way your hair reflected the light.

you held my hand
and promised me that you would be there
when the sun stopped shining,
when the clouds pushed my heart
to the ground.

light rays illuminate
the emptiness at my side.

iii.

the leaves fell
and you whispered your secrets to me,
your breath hot in my ear.

you pulled me into a pile
of reds and golds,
colors i hadn't seen on trees
in years.

i could feel your heart beating
in time with mine
as we laid there,
staring at the clouds
as they drifted across the sky.

iiii.

i cried
when the snow came,
blanketing the world in white.

you traced soft circles on my back,
trying to calm my frozen, frenzied breaths;
there was a lingering trail of
goosebumps on my skin
and i couldn't tell if it was you
or just the bitter winds.

iiiii.

yesterday it was cloudy
and i kept waiting for the sun
but it never came.

your birthday present
has been sitting on my kitchen counter
for weeks now,
but you are not coming back.
