The Dog-Man

Let me tell you of a legend

Those who fight for justice,

And who give their life to protect.

One young man stood alone

chosen by the Great Prophet,

to start a new society was his chore,

but no one wanted to stand with him.

So alone and ridiculed he stood that day.

Saddened by the days end he sat

in the middle of the camp circle.

He prayed to the Great Prophet and

the Great Medicine man to help him,

and began to sing a sacred song at sunset.

As he sang the dogs in the camp

began to whine and howl, and become restless.

He sang from sunset to midnight,

then he began to wail.

After going unheard by the camp,

he left the circle, followed by every dog in the camp.

Four times he sang

before he reached his destination.

At sunrise he and the dogs arrived.

The man sat by a tree and the dogs

formed a semi-circle around him.

Suddenly a lodge sprang up over the man

who was sitting in the center of the circle.

As it appeared all the dogs rushed into it,

as they did they turned into human beings,

dressed like members of the Dog-Man Society.

As the Dog-Men began to sing,

the man listened and learned from them,

their songs, dances and their ceremonies.

Blessed by the Dog-Men the man was promised

his people would be successful in life,

and that his people would be the greatest if they

carried out their instructions.

Today these men are the protectors of the young,

weak, women, and the elderly.

They are more than just a legend.

These men are known to the Cheyenne

as Dog Soldiers.

    The Dog Soldiers,

a society of honored warriors, not just mere legend. You have done honor to this select group of warriors who through time have served without pause or thought for the sacrifice.
You words also paint heartfelt emotions of one you knew personally. The memory of whom is honored by your words and your steadfast solidarity in union. Excellent composition as always!

    Respectfully,
    Silent Hawk

Well, I can't agree with my eight esteemed fellow poets below, and I'm not trying to be an old crumudgeon, but your wording... your words...

    young man
    Great Prophet
    Great Medicine Man
    new society
    sacred song
    Dog-Man Society.
    Dog men
    Dog soldiers

These were the only nouns modified by adjectives that I saw. The poem begs for 'mellifluous sacred songs' or 'bronze-hued Dog men' or some other sort of organic, adjective-based fertilizer to snap some poetic life into this prose. I say prose because line breaks are the only poetic device that I see here.

As noted in previous reviews, the story carries a nominal amount of plot interest, but many of the thematic elements seem to act more as props rather than, well, as thematic elements. One might ask, "what is magic about the number four in the passage:

    Four times he sang
    before he reached his destination.

What was the significance of those stops? The motivation?

    Then in:

Suddenly a lodge sprang up over the man
who was sitting in the center of the circle.
As it appeared all the dogs rushed into it,
as they did they turned into human beings,
dressed like members of the Dog-Man Society.

One wonders how a "lodge" suddenly springs out of anywhere. What is the lodge? Part of the tree? Buffalo skin?

Just my opinion, but I'd like to see more connectivity here, more segue between quantum leaps.

This was so eloquently written, and told a remarkable tale; I certainly wasn't expecting the part where the dogs leapt inwards and then changed to human beings ... but overall; you set the scenes - I could almost hear the dogs howling myself

Great job; and best of luck in the contest
