For centuries I’ve walked alone,
I trek these killing fields
Through battles fought I’ve witnessed death,
from right behind their shields
I’ve gathered up those countless lost,
to send them on their way
To where it is that death takes you,
when you wither and start to fray
This duty was not my choosing,
one must guide the lost
My soul now ash, my heart cold stone,
my peace has been the cost
I must carry with me this curse I wear,
with its burden and its shame
For once I was a player in death,
then found it was no game
The rot of flesh the emptiness,
the dryness within my bones
I’ve walked for years in abandonment,
so thirsty and alone

Wonderful insightful write. Death, no one ever wonders if it was his choice to be whom and what he is. Its something to think about and I ask that question in a poem of my own titled "It's Just A Job". I enjoy your work tremendously and this one is fantastic as usual. Congratulations on the Bronze but deserving of the Gold. God Bless, Jo-Ann
