Happy anniversary to the love of my life
Twelve years ago, you made me your wife
Your touch is still gentle, with words as sweet
Deep in my heart, your love I will keep
You rescued me from a life of certain doom
Giving me a chance to grow and bloom
It wasn’t by accident that we first met
Because God had a hand in it, I bet
He knew from the start of my trouble and strife
That I would need you to level out my life
My burdens were many and heavy to carry
When it came to trusting, I had grown wary
After fifteen years of being mistreated and abused
Finally escaping, I vowed to never again be used
Another husband was the last thing on my list
Trust me when I say that a man was not missed
I raised up my kids the best that I could
While longing for someone in my life that was good
Then came the day that I threw in the towel
All the guys I knew were just on the prowl
Then one morning I opened the door to your knock
I’m sure my face must have registered my shock
You had been our best friend for many years
Though I always kept secret my worries and fears
I bet you could hear my heart beating loud and fast
With one glance, I knew I had come home at last
Six months later our plans had been laid
At our wedding, all my fears finally started to fade
Never a harsh word from you do I hear
After all these years, one thing is still clear
My blessings are worth more than silver or gold
For the rest of my life onto you I will hold
Happy anniversary to the man of my dreams
Each year only gets better, we make a great team

this sort of poetry serves it's purpose, and is beautiful because of that--however, my old creative writing teacher would have called it, 'dead puppy on the freeway'
In other words, intentionally trying to pluck the reader's heartstrings. Perfectly suitable for the inside of a hallmark card, or to give to your loved one, but not something I would read for pleasure.
I was once told not to write about love--absolutely everything that could possibly be said about it, has already been said. I don't agree with that. People should write about whatever they feel like writing about. But, in the end, it's true that love is easily the hardest thing to write about without being cliched.
I suggest you look up "valediction forbidding mourning" by John Donne. It is, quite simply, the most beautiful love poem I have ever read.

This is a wonderful write! Love the background and it's okay that it isn't Left aligned. I understand in cases such as this. Beautifully written poem too. So loving and romantic. Great job. My husband and I will be celebrating our 17th year together in April. So congrats you have been together a long time. Bet it doesn't seem that long though does it. It doesn't for me and my husband. We seem to have met just yesterday. I love this write. Thanks for sharing this and thanks for entering it into my contest.

Ahhh. It is very refreshing to hear a happy ending for once after all the darkness I have read. This is a loving write and very beautiful.
I love your use of the past and the present. You compared a life in which you suffered and where weak and weary, to one in which you are fulfilled, content and still very much in love. I love to see things like this, because lets admit it, they rarely do. You got your second change and you squeezed happiness out of it.
You executed this very sweetly and genuinely which made a great impact upon my thoughts of this piece. I am thrilled that after all these years starting from where he cared for your wounds, you are still a happy couple. I do believe God intended for that to happen.... Good luck. ♥ -
