Just as it were
The two of us
Fingers tightly interlaced
Feet dipped, up to our ankles
In warm water from the lake
Friendship painted
Where it did not belong
What I needed was a parent
You, refused to grow up
Rendering me transparent
My needs, ignored
Not by any intentional design
You sought to find yourself
Live your life through my eyes
Held my childhood on a shelf
Two Old Style beers
Sit resting on the dock
A symbol of what would come
I pick mine up and sigh, deeply
Pulling at the tab with my thumb
