The Happy Pig

Missing image

Free from encumbrance, he drifts with a smile
Sails on fortuitous winds
The weight of the world never burdening his shoulders
His spirit rejoices
His happy heart sings

Gleefully grunting, he finds his way home
Protected from coldness and rain
Nestled and cradled in vacuous bliss
His simple mind knowing no pain

And to his door, on sunlight wings
Come gifts from the heavens above:
Perpetual luck
Immutable joy
And the ineffable blessing of love

Oh how you must laugh at our piteous plight
How our struggle must surely regale you
Sheltered and warm, ever safe from the storm,
Your destiny never to fail you

Prosperous fool, you kindle my hate!
You steal my dreams, you mock my fate

Insufferable creature, what life have you earned?
What trials have you faced, what lessons learned?

Still blithe you remain, as you fuel our disdain
Can’t see the night in the sky
Contemptible beast, take thy form from my hall
And wallow in thy sty

Yet wallow he shall
In comfort and joy
Unscathed by the bitter wind’s rage

He laughs through the night,
Thinks he’s got it alright
While the angry man sleeps in his cage

You know the old saying, "ignorance is bliss." Or at least for the ignorant one.

It's hard for those who toil away to see those who don't have to, not surprising be apply epithets like, "pig" to them. What is real about this poem is the honesty. The poem begins on an ironic tone (right down to the background) and the wise reader sees this and takes heed.

It's why the poor dislike the rich, and why the both dislike the unemployed. Whether it's a true vision they have, is another question, but that feeling they have.

This piece makes an interesting point. It's interesting how the mood changes suddenly in the middle of it, from peaceful to relentlessly jelous. Yes, the hog may be living the high life, but humans don't go under the butcher's knife on a regular basis. Well done!
