Autumn Senses

To hear the sound of fallen leaves that crunch beneath my feet
or the squirrel as it chatters in the tree,
the rustle of the russet leaves is really such a treat
the symphony of life is mine for free.

To smell the smoke of wood fires as it drifts above the town
or the perfume of an early Autumn rose,
the smell of dampened soil as the rains fall gently down
or an evening meal that’s cooking while I doze.

Hedgerows in their purple dress with fruit that’s ripe to pick
and fully-laden orchards with their prize,
some honey from the beehive that is oh so sweet to lick
become the sweetest feast for hungry eyes.

To feel the damp of Autumn’s mist that swirls above the ground
or feel the biting chill upon my face,
Jack Frost will come and spread his icy fingers all around
while rays of golden sun will give him chase.

As Mother Nature wears her gown of patchwork red and gold
the countryside is cloaked for me to see,
the beauty of this season is a wondrous sight to hold
all my senses come alive inside of me.

  • Lovely. The pick/lick stanza feels too easy for me. Other than that, I quite liked this piece. Well done.

Love the image too - beautiful!

    Thanks for entering.

    Sincerely,

    Excellent

Superb poetry without poetising! The description is so true to life. You have very keen observant eyes coupled with a rare narrative power and a capability to love nature. The rhyming is perfect to a fault and your choice of words could not be bettered. A wonderful piece of poetry I enjoyed enormously.

Ah, wood smoke. Have you ever burned any cherry?
A more distasteful smoke occurs whenever I doze while cooking dinner. Not reccomended.

The perfect written picture of what the season is like right now here in Minnesota, a delight for the senses, the same way your poem is a charm for our minds. Wonderfully crafted as usual!
