Just Married

Missing image
Just married; ivory, silver
and November moved
to their tender steps
in the crisp autumnal breeze...

It could have been fifty years ago
when the snow fell like
sweet sugar and clung to her dress,
and when he spilled
fresh love from his green eyes
for the hope this moment would last.

The moment though,
spread into decades
of memories; tears and smiles
on similar little faces
who today,
all gather in their best
as if it was fifty years ago.

Just married;
ivory roses, silver hair
and another blessed November
move to the renewal of cherished vows;
to the fifty years of devotion,
and to the star-crossed newly weds.

Author notes

I'm 20, and it baffles me how two people can live for so long just loving each other. All I know is it must take a connection like no other and two strong minded and hearted people to overcome all that life throws over 5 decades.
This poem is to everyone who has ever celebrated a golden wedding anniversary, and for those who never let the flame of being a newly wed die out.

    i love these thoughts.. I think it is still so possible..was just reading a book of real couples who have been married at least 40 years and they were interviewed..not everything being sweet and sugary but they found ways to remaiin in love keep things fresh.. that it takes effort that many just don't want to put into relationships/ marriagesI this is a beautiful poem!. Thanks!

    Beautifully Sentimental

    It brought tears to my eyes because being newly married myself, I pray that I will see those 50 years myself. I loved it and it was descriptive and flowing. Yours in poetry, gypsy

    This is beautiful!! The imagery is really stunning, and the idea you chose to write about is a beautiful one. I know
    a people who have been married for decades (my grandparents have been married close to 50 years) and if both people are truly selfless and constantly focus on the other rather than on themselves, love is something that grows.
    In the Jewish world (I'm sure elsewhere as well but I can write about what I know) "love" is a verb. It is defined (one definition) is "the process of focusing on the good in another person." This brings on the feeling of "being in love." When a person is infatuated with someone it is easy to focus only on the good. The challenge is to do it over the many years of marriage.
    Beautiful write!!

    This was lovely to read. My husband's grandparents were married over 60 years. Grandma passed over a year ago, but you would be amazed at the love they still shared. It was a beautiful thing.

    But isn't it great to know it sometimes happens? I love the way you have expressed so much in your poem. Wonderful!
