of substances ruling your life,
altering your mind,
taking advantage of your healthy body
and infecting it with toxic materials
that allow you to temporarily relieve stress
and forget about mistakes
about troubles
about life.
The alternate therapy
Of popping, crushing, snorting
Grinding, smoking, shooting up
Violates what your body needs
To survive
To live
To exist.
They strip you down to your essentials
Where a conscious state of mind
Is far from your reach
And all you can do
Is slump down in the couch and close your eyes
Because keeping them open is just too much effort
For your feeble mind to handle.
In one instant,
The whole world could pass you by
But you'd be too fucked up to even know it.
Author notes
addiction sort of inspired by this quote from the perks of being a wallflower -
"I walked over to the hill where we used to go and sled. There were a lot of little kids there. I watched them flying. Doing jumps and having races. And I thought that all those little kids are going to grow up someday. And all of those little kids are going to do the things that we do. And they will all kiss someone someday. But for now, sledding is enough. I think it would be great if sledding were always enough, but it isn't."

Addiction
Is a b!tch, I know. I hope you'll be able to pull through. Ive lost many friends to drugs, and I almost lost myself. Lucky for me I had fucked up my brain so bad, I had to stop. I couldn't speak a sentence without mix matching words every other 3. I'm still recovering from use. Its been a year and its hard. Still on my mind. My friends are still on the drugs... and thats more then enough to help me keep off.... -
Your poem strikes the heart with sadness and a feeling of contempt. It is hard for anyone to see with a clear and keen eye, the harm an addict actually brings upon himself or herself, and for those who love them to have to sit and watch without lashing out, is near impossible.
This seems to be a necessary work of poetry for you poet. As if you unleashed a heavy weight, and can now release, no matter what the addict chooses to do.

I am an addict in recovery, and touched by the sincerity of your words written here poet. Thank you for taking the time to submit this poem in my contest. If you did not help anyone else with these words, you truly helped me today.
Much Love & Respect ♥

This is a powerful poem and describes drug use very well. I can really relate to this poem as well.
