in a romper suit, a mischievous tiny tot.
I would watch from my bed, as this tiny bundle of walking clothes,
would teeter upon tippy toes.
Not making a sound as he crept along the floor,
he would make his way out the bedroom door.
Waiting, I knew he would soon be back
quicker than a lightning flash.
As he made his way along the dark passage you see,
our mum and dad would stir from their sleep.
Making a u turn, running back,
my little brother, a streak of light blue against the black,
would come crashing back, leaping into his white cot
like a frisky young springbok.
Hearing my mum make her way to our room,
hiding under my blankets trying not to move,
she would tuck my brother back in,
peek and see if I was sleeping.
This used to go on most nights.
sometimes he would get to where the wall ends giving us all a fright,
as he went bump bump bump plop landing a crumpled heap
at the bottom of the stairs, my brother a mischievous tiny tot.
Author notes
I have always had this image of my little brother launching himself into his cot, always it seemed dressed in a blue romper suit with a rabbit on the front.
On a recent visit from Sweden I asked my mum about this and apparently he did used to climb out of his cot, and then come flying back in...he was 8months old and I was 2. And occasionally he would make it to where the wall ends and the stairs begin, thinking it was still there he would go flying down them a crumpled heap at the bottom. LOL!!!
This is my very first memory.

This is a very delightful memory to look back on! So winsome... it reminds me a little of that Talking Heads song, "sister, sister, he's just a plaything. We're gonna make him stay up all night."

well, it's this song, though I never saw the video before now either:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xtEUCR0dZgM but there was a children's book done to these lyrics and I think it is those illustrations that your poem made me think of more.

HE SOUNDS LIKE QUITE A MISCHIEVOUS CHAP - JUST LIKE HIS OLDER SISTER! HE! HE!
He also sounds quite lucky to me as he didn't get hurt falling down those stairs. A fine memory, Sugar! I wish you GOOD LUCK with it in this contest, Baby - and THANK YOU for sharing it with me, as always!
Love & Peace!
Earl.
ME? I was always tearing me romper suit off and running around the house in me birthday suit - a youthful habit that I still haven't quite grown out of - over half a century later! HE! HE!

Me? mischievous never...whatever gave you that idea?? LMAO! He used to bounce well Earl hehehehehe
That's when we weren't dressing him up in our dolls clothes...he was a tortured child...by his sisters.
Always appreciate you reading and commenting sweetie...now go get dressed before you catch ya death.

Wonderful
Hahahahaha. That was great. What a great image that was. Brilliantly-written as well. I can just imagine him, hurtling himself back into his cot on hearing your mum coming. Fantastic piece Sugar.

Thank you hon for reading about my first memory. There are many more from when I was older that are just as much fun although I do believe he would disagree. Like the time he broke the same window twice and said it was my fault...I didn't throw the bag of sweets and put me foot through it.
LOL!!!
It's been a pleasure to see you visiting.

This is so sweet, except the tumble down the stairs. It reminds me of my son who use to get out of his crib, how I don't know but he sure did give me a fright a few times.
Well done -

Thank you for reading and commenting, valued and appreciated.
He always used to follow the wall with the stairwell in it and if he got that far he used to fall down. Even when my dad put a stair gate up he worked out how that opened, there was no stopping him. LOL!
