To The Desert, An Echo

Tears freeze to eyes
that never blink,
caught in tumult
amidst spiraling winds,
eternally breathing secrets
to a flinching ear,
that never wished to hear.

Was that last secret the truth?

There was no parching desert,
except the one that existed
purely by self-construction;
this comfortable prison,
to exalt in all the grief
of a singular hatred nurtured,
into mirages of self-blame.

Why do I cast myself as evil?

A stage-play lacking virtue
where all the actors mock,
with smug pointed soliloquy,
in full realization,
that they use your own words
as a trident of abuse,
stabbing at your weakest points.

Can I ever find an echo of heaven?

Author notes

Hell can often be of our own making. It is a trap, a trap we can set ourselves, the trap of self-hatred, the trap of not letting go of the past, the trap of chewing yourself up with what-if's, the trap of freeing yourself, only to drag yourself back down again.

Sometimes we do take responsibility and cast ourselves into Hell for it, even for things that we do not have the responsibility for, as it is can be easier and more comfortable to blame and hate yourself, despite the pain.

    well done!
I hope we all hear the wise words in this poem!
In times when I have felt like what I was going thru
must be the realms of hell.........it was comforting
to have others who knew the sorrow and grief I was
struggling thru....i think you bring up many good points
    in your poem.
    Thankyou for your entry!

Thanks. I think it must be part of the human condition that when we go through such times and such emotions we can never see that there are likely a multitude of people feeling and experiencing the same...we always think our experiences are singular to ourselves.

    very wisely written....
if you think about our earthly history..and much there is
    to read and learn.....
it seems man has a tendency to "demonize" what they
    fear to understand.

or perhaps a time when they were not ready to confront.
such as prejudice, racism, equal freedoms.
I like this poem very much!

    p.s.
    interesting...how in these contest poems..the
mention of heaven is written to echo through.

Thank you very much, yes, demonization through fear has been very prevelent, though it has also been done as a means of gaining advantage, often done as a psychological device to create fear in either an opposing viewpoint or belief as a means of indoctrination, as much dehumanising as demonizing.

I think heaven, if there is such a thing, does resonate in many people's minds as an echo, it is a thought, a vision, something that we may percieve that is just out of reach, not fully formed or realise, like hearing voices talking but just out of range to hear the actual words.
