The Old Warrior

Having fought in wars in foreign lands,
He now must live with bloodied hands.
It is not a thing he cares to share.
For no one knows who wasn't there.

Yet when eyes are closed he sees the face
Of a young man gone with out a trace.
He believed what he did was right;
He wasn't there just to start a fight.

He was doing what he was told,
So he stood up brave and bold.
With knife in belt and gun in hand
He'd kill them all to defend his land.

Later on as his wisdom grew
He came to learn  that he'd been used
For another man's fear had been to blame
For the lives that he'd been forced to claim

But it's not for a warrior to question why;
It is his duty to go forth, and kill.. or die!

    Old men Will talk and the young will fight their fights.Many not believing in what they are fighting for but because the are trained to follow orders,(and to not let down the comrade standing by his side ) they do so with out a second thought.Only when the fight is through to often return home to be forgotten or insulted by their own country men An excellent piece and a joy to read Well done

    Wonderful Write!

    Over and over again young men through out the ages have this same testimony you so eloquently wrote. When will we learn another way to settle our differences. I can't think of one myself but hopefully one day someone will. The imagery of your words bring forth much saddness but yet pride that our young men and now women defend us so. God Bless, Jo-Ann

    This is so very true

    You said it hubby dear. This is awesome and so correct. I hate what war does. If we all started to think good thoughts about each other then there would be no war. No chance of that soon.! But who knows, in the future we may all be so reliant on each other worldwide for food and water etc that a war would be stupidity.

      Thanks my beautiful wifey dear,
      It is not as visual as I would have liked. But it makes a statement in its own way.

      Sadly it is true, that for the foreseeable future, there will continue to be a need for the warrior. It is just a shame that so many young warriors across the world will die in needless and foolish battles, for the sake of greed, pride, believing false words, and insanity.
      Reliant on others for food and water might end war? I hate to be a pessimist, my love, but history tells us that when there is not enough to go around.. wars will be fought for it and people will die.

    Powerful

    I think you put it into the perspective it should be in. This is an honest and thoughtful write. No many can see this when things like war occur.

      Thank you for the quick comment my good friend. After critically reading the poem aloud, I was editing the first draft when you responded.. I was tripping up too much on that third stanza. I hope this final version is better and smoother.
