Chest Filled With Gold

If I were to bury a chest

with memories of

living in this time and place,

I would include copies of all my

lost old poems,

some from high school,

others from college days,

still more about love.

moving like all insults,

allows us to lose these things.

tears, sad tears, there's no retrieving them!

there were serious poems, odes, ballads, free verse,

simple rhymes, sweet poems, sad poems,

all kinds of poems.

yes, poems styled like Sandburg,

e.e. cummings, Whitman, and many others.

only an engineer with an english minor could

want to save all these things for posterity!

Author notes

This contest entry inspired me to dig up and re-write an earlier poem memorializing my lost poems!
