Dr. Leary's Circuit Dance (aka Bell's Theoretical Romance)

another morning waking up alone
why did I stay home, again?
(bio-survival ticket shortage, as always)
two weeks is hardly forever
but the first's not yet over
and you're already just a ghost,
a movie I once saw.

which is perfectly ridiculous.
I talked to you last night.
(The miracle of AIM.)
somehow, though,
I can't convince myself
that I'm not just
relapsing
that the whole affair,
and these electronic conversations,
haven't just been figment scraps,
psychotic fragments.

telephones
are similarly unconvincing.

fifth circuit malfunctions,
punching Bio-Survival anxiety buttons,
awakening the grumpy Metaprogramming Chair in seventh:
"Don't make me come down there!"
annoyed,
Seven initiates a task,
manifest as...
a craving for cannabis.

I feel more grounded now,
fifth circuit running again,
fourth dormant,
third resting,
second on passive alert,
first content.
all standard systems normal,
auxiliary silent.
theoretically, all is well.

but I still resent
the fading of sensations,
replaced by this insufferably dull space, this
lack of potential called emptiness.
I don't have a Bose-Einstein Condensate
nor a powerful laser.
so my own barely-used eighth circuit
will just have to do.

can you feel my atoms
feeling yours
yet?

clairvoyance is the wrong word.
there is no separation of senses
when you're a cloud of quarks, quivering
on-in vibrating strings of information
linking every one of your kind
to every other.

there is no loneliness
for a quark.

sadly, honey,
only my data travels:
a thousand-mile hug
is the best I can manage.

fortunately,
it's almost been a week.
you'll be home soon...

( ... if this isn't all
just some
drug-induced fantasy
of neurology, quantum physics,
and love,
that is.)

This is interesting. The title is great and the writing is superb too. I actually enjoyed this a whole lot. Interesting that it can only a day after I discussed something very similar to this in my philosophy course. Good job!

Synchronicity is a commonly-noted feature of quantum data-sharing. Thank you.

Oh dear, I'm such a sucker for this poem! I feel strongly attached to it because I too, found my beloved online (here as a matter of fact) and we dealt with the long distance thing for as long as we could stand it. There is a certain romanticism laced up in this piece tied together with symbols of a computerized existence.

Nicely done and thank you for your entry!

You captured this great, I guess because it's coming from your gut. The internet has made it a whole lot easier for people to come together, but there is a weird vibe to it, makes you question a lot of things. I hope he's home now! Thank you for entering the contest, good luck.
