Instead, With You

No one really knew,
The pain I had been through,
The bruises and the lies,
That I had endured.

You fought so hard to free me,
Not knowing all my chains.
I used to get so angry,
But I'd grown to love your ways.

No one ever cared,
Even then, I thought it true,
For I'd seen the look they gave me,
Every time I dared to tell.

My heart grew sick and twisted,
With every passing day,
As I waited for those words,
To show upon your face.

Your chance had come at last,
You had learned the truth.
You looked to all my filth,
But to you, I was unchanged.

In their eyes, I've always seen,
The words "I pity you."
But instead, with you, I saw,
The plea, "Just be with me."

Author notes

I used the title as the prompt, as well as the poem a bit. Also, obviously, I drew from the word bank.
