I lost my heart in the country

I lost my heart in the country,
the place where the dirt is blood red,
far from all the buzz and commotion,
where hard work is done and not said.

Where the ash and the gum tree cast shaddows,
accross fields of a golden hue,
where the air hangs about you like curtains,
and you wake to a carpet of dew

And the fields and the paddocks are endless,
and roll further then our eyes can see,
and your heart, it beats faster inside you,
when the break of the morning you see.

These are the lands of our fathers,
the lands that broke many a heart,
and this is where our hope was started,
and where we watch some poor lives fall apart,

Oh the bitter sweetness that it brings me,
one day toil, the next sweet success,
but once in your heart it is hid there,
there is never a moment of rest

Oh, my country, forever I'll love you,
and long in your heartland to stay,
though my body should ever grow weary,
still my heart, it will beg me to say,

Heart of my soul, my country,
that is drenched in my blood, sweat and tears,
my heart and my soul, they will know you,
through many a drought stricken year!
