Never ask for your love to give up all her friends
You must see jealousy has no part in this life
Always love who she is not the way she pretends
Real love does not ask for a slave as a wife
When you give of yourself to your love you will grow
And you'll find happiness in the smile on her face
There will be a reward in the form of a glow
When you know selfishness has to be out of place
All the time that you give to the truth of your heart
Will be paid back in kind if her love does not lie
There is nothing more sure to tear people apart
Than demanding a part of your partner must die
All of you must be there in the life that you share
When true love's in the air nothing else can compare
Author notes
A sonnet, of sorts. dodecasyllabic tetrameter with a Shakespearean rhyme scheme.
Real at the start of line four is pronounced re-al here.

Outstanding
I thought this was well thought through with good attention to detail and a nice concept. Love should never hold somebody back it should always help them to grow. I liked the way you developed the theme and the last couplet. Best of luck in the contest.

A very good poem-a thought provoking read. The truth can be found within this poem.

This is the truth for both men and women. We all need to keep our personal identities within a realationship. We should never turn our backs on friends. One day we will need such friendship and so will they.Friends add to a relationship and can stop it from becoming stale.A great thought for the day , Ros

Nice, bro.

Beautiful write. I like the message in this piece. I think that's very true that if a person truly loves another, they will accept them just as they are. Wonderful poetic form, as well. Thanks for sharing and best of luck in the contest.

Jealousy will certainly break up a relationship. If you are trustworthy than you have no reason to worry. Asking another to give up friends or family is not a way for the relationship to grow. My mother has a gentleman friend and he was asked by his ex girlfriend to quit seeing his mother. Needless to say that relationship is no longer. Be true to yourself and good things will come your way.

Well said,
every word and thought true.
Sounds very familiar to what someone said to me quite a few times, which reminds me of so many religious leaders who don't practice what they preach.
Good luck in the contest,

Too true; ultimatiums rarely if ever work. I issued one before, to a friend, and it was a jolly big mistake at the time - we've since more than patched things up, but, looking back on it, i'm sickened by what i did. you worded this very well
