Open, whole, for you to take,
And steal you did, yet looking back,
Your love was a gift; not a mistake.
For through the years that we shared,
Bonded together; loving and living,
You taught me lessons I cannot forget,
Together, we had less taking than giving.
But came the day of darkest age,
By poison's hand that you fell ill,
Yet because of love, for me, from you,
There lay no question of losing your will
To live, to wait, to hold on,
I became your living cancer;
Held tight within my loving arms,
It was then I knew; only one answer.
And so the tears fell thick and fast,
Burning with fury upon my face,
Like acid rain from fiery skies
As I held you close, in my embrace.
Then closed my eyes, with shoulders tense,
And spoke in quiet, shuddering breath,
My permission for you to leave,
Then sent you peaceful, to your death.
My heart, it snapped, to realise
No more together we would be.
For, because I loved you so,
I made the choice, and set you free.
Author notes
Another in memory of Bambi. Animal Lovers will understand this; when you take a creature into your home, they become your best friend, ocasionally your soul mate - and you love them with all your heart. Yet, for the most part, we must be selfless at the end, and grant them permission to go, and to leave us behind, for their lives are so much shorter than our own.
But it is never easy to release someone that you love, forever...

Animal love has seemed to be the greatest love in the contest that I am holding. Thank you so much for your entry and good luck!! -
-
thank you
Yep, well I find that animals bring so much love to our lives that humans often can't - and, when you're wandering the world alone and unable to find someone to share your love with, then animals do help to fill that spot, not wholly, but almost ... and I feel for people that don't/can't love animals because I do truly feel they're missing out

A very touching poem written with a lot of human empathy for your beloved pet and companion. Best of luck in my contest, and thanks for entering. ( I just want to add, that whoever would poison a defenseless animal is the most despicable and cowardly fiend imaginable.)

I at first thought this was about human to human love and then I read the AN. But I have something to say about both interpretations. In the human to human way, I couldn't help but think of someone who was in love with someone who had cancer(or another life threatening disease) and had to tell them goodbye so their death wouldn't be that much more painful. In the animal/human way, I couldn't help but think of my own cat. I read about what happened with Bambi on your profile, and I relate to that so well. My own cat was 17 and we had to put her down last January. My cat was like family and I was soo upset. Well, great write and I'm sorry about what happened with your cat as well.

Oh wow, I can see it all happening in front of me. This is a great write and it is perfect the way it is!

thank you so much
i wasn't sure if the love of a cat would be allowed, as i know that many think 'pfft it's just a cat' but to me she was a helluva lot more

So beautiful this write
When a pet becomes old and fragile and they look up to you to care for them and make each day the most comfortable you can .The love in their eyes is so touching and their need to be close to you for as they protected you so shall you return that protection untill they find their way home .

thank you patty
i am not sure what is harded; giving up an elderly pet, or one who is still young; bambi was only six years old when she was poisoned, which i think is what made it so hard and yet - if she were still alive, my life would be so much different as i would not have moved to london for that would mean living without her. so ... god works in mysterious ways

Sorry to disappoint

eejit? LOL

Ahhh, an eejit = fool!
Pronounced as it looks, "eee-jit"
Or, in Irish, it's amadán, pronounced am-a-dawn

Ah..the pages of the diary are sometimes more than the life..I can see the words relating with its scenariuo of love and life..just a piece of the heart of the poet..well done..and thanks for sharing it...

Thank you so much for your comment
You hit the nail on the head, that any matter in relation to Bambi is more a piece of my heart than a piece of poetic writing. All the best
